The Department of Infrastructure comprises public works infrastructure (public works, transport infrastructure), human settlements and community-based programmes/Expanded Public Works Programme(EPWP).
The Western Cape Government established the Masakh’iSizwe Bursary Programme in 2006. It was created to address skills shortages, and empower youth by giving them the opportunity to earn a tertiary degree through full-time study at Higher Education Institutions within the Western Cape Province.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure, in partnership with the higher education institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and relevant professional bodies, provides bursary funding each year to students studying transport, engineering, and built environment, or any other discipline deemed critical and scarce by the Department of Infrastructure.
ABOUT THE MASAKH’ISIZWE PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
Students can apply to the Masakh’iSizwe bursary programme for the 2025 academic years.
Students pursuing a degree or diploma in the Transport Engineering and Built Environment sector will be eligible for bursaries.

The Department of Infrastructure will also award bursaries for study in disciplines that it deems to be critical and scarce.
MASAKH’ISIZWE BURSARY – EXPENSES COVERSED & SELECTION
The bursary covers the following costs: tuition fees, textbooks and prescribed study materials prescribed by the university, support programmes (such as accommodation or meals), and any other expenses.
Bursaries also provide students with these benefits: Support services programmes, learning opportunities (internships) for bursary recipients and employment opportunities for graduates.

MASAKH’ISIZWE BURSARY – OBLIGATIONS & CONTRACT OF SERVICE
Bursary recipients are required to attend certain workshops, events, and meetings during weekends. They may also be required participate in academic experiential training or outreach programmes.
After graduation, recipients of bursaries employed by the Department of Infrastructure are required to complete a Professional Development Training Programme in order to obtain professional registration.
ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS FOR THE MASAKH’ISIZWE BURSARY
Before applying, applicants must meet the minimum requirements (please be aware that if you do not meet all of the requirements your application will not be considered).
- You must be a South African Citizen
- You must either be currently enrolled in Matriculation or have completed your Matriculation.
- You must have studied or plan to study full-time towards a degree or diploma in one of these fields in 2025.
- You must be a student at the University of Cape Town, University of Stellenbosch or Cape Peninsula University of Technology in the Western Cape.
- Priority will be given to students who are financially disadvantaged, female, disabled and from the Western Cape.
