How To Calculate APS – UJ
To calculate your Admission Point Score (APS) for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), follow these guidelines:
- Understand the APS: The APS is derived from the Achievement Rating of each subject you’ve taken.
- Calculate the Total APS: Add up the Achievement Ratings of six school subjects. Note that Life Orientation is excluded from this total.
For International Qualifications:
- Ordinary Level (O) Grades:
- If you have results from WAEC, Diplome or Exam D’Etat, Certificado de Habilitscoes Literarias, Ensino Medio, or Baccalaureat, these should be equated to the O Grades in UJ’s database.
- South African NSC (N) Grades:
- Results from HIGCSE, NSSC (HL), AS Level, IB (SL), and KCSE should be matched with the N Grades.
- Advanced Level (A) Grades:
- A Level or IB (HL) results should be linked to the A Grades.
APS | NSC/IEB/SACAI |
7 | 7 (80-100%) |
6 | 6 (70-79%) |
5 | 5 (60-69%) |
4 | 4 (50-59%) |
3 | 3 (40-49%) |
2 | 2 (30-39%) |

Points are awarded for the six symbols on your Grade 11 or Grade 12 report. See example below.
