Bursaries are available to students who have applied to higher educational institutions, as well as to current students in programmes like pharmacy, chartered accountancy, logistics and industry engineering, Information Technology, hospitality, retail management, professional cooking, and Information Technology.
The Shoprite bursary can range from R45000 to R70000 depending on the study field and institution. The bursary includes tuition, books, and accommodation allowances. The extra money will be paid out in monthly installments. The bursary recipient will have to work at Shoprite for the same period of time as the bursary was awarded. If a module is not passed, it will be repeated by the bursary recipient. The bursary awarded will also be suspended, but not cancelled. Reapplication is allowed after the failed module has been passed.
Shoprite awards bursaries to students in the following fields every year:
- Accounting: The accounting bursary is designed to attract and fund talented Chartered Accounting Students who will join our Finance Team after completing their studies. You will gain exposure to all of the Group of Companies by joining their Accounting Articles Programme.
- Bursary for Criminology: The Bursary aims to attract and fund future Data & Crime analysts who will become part of the Security & Loss Prevention Department upon completion of their studies.
- Information Technology/Systems Bursary: This bursary is designed to attract and fund Information Technology/Systems students with a passion for and vision of ensuring dynamic outcomes in an area that is known for its constant change.
- Data Science Shoprite has started its own Data Science Academy and is producing high-level specialists within the field of Data Science. This bursary is designed to help cover the academic costs of your university studies and ensure that you are eligible for the Data Science Academy when you graduate.
- Food Sciences:The Bursary is designed to attract and fund talented students who are interested in Culinary/Hospitality fields, so that they can become part of the Fresh Foods Team after completing their studies.
- Logistics/ Supply Chain This Bursary is designed to attract and fund future Logistics and Supply Chain Specialists who will join Africa’s leading retailer of fast-moving consumer products in distribution and related activities.
- Retail/Hospitality Management: This Bursary is designed to attract and fund future Trainee Retail managers who wish to pursue a lucrative career in Retail.
- Pharmacy : This Bursary is designed to attract and fund talented Pharmacy and Pharmacy Technologist students with a passion for the Retail Industry. The Bursary can be applied to students in their first, second, third and fourth years.
- Ecommerce (UI/UX Design) The bursary will be awarded to talented students in the UI/ Visual Communications area, who are interested in joining the Product and Design Team of the company after graduation.

- You can choose to study towards BCom Accounting or BAcc (CA stream).
- You are in your second, third, fourth year of studies / PGDA/CTA
- Attained a minimum average of 65%
- Achieved minimum results of 65% in Accounting, Auditing and taxation
- South Africa: Studying in a recognised and accredited institution
- For Criminology Bursary:
- You can choose to study towards the following qualifications: Bachelor of Criminology (B.Crim. ), BA Law/BA. Social Work with Criminology majored, BA. Honours in Criminology
- You are in your third or fourth year of study or you have chosen to do honours.
- Attained a minimum average of 65%
- South Africa: Studying in a recognised and accredited institution
- For Information Technology Bursary:
- You can study towards these qualifications: BSc/ BCom majoring in Information Systems/ Systems Analysis
- You are in your second, third or fourth year of study
- South Africa: Studying in a tertiary accredited and recognised institution
- Data Science Bursary:
- You can study towards a degree in any of the following fields: Data Science (or Data Engineering), Computer Science, Mathematics Industrial Engineering, Statistics Operational Research Quantitative management or a similar quantitative qualification.
- You can start studying in your second to third year.
- Attained a minimum average of 60%
- Achieved minimum Mathematics result of 65%
- South Africa: Studying in a recognised tertiary education institution
- Food Science Bursary
- You can study towards any of the following qualifications: BSc Food Science, Consumer Science Microbiology Food Technology Advanced Diploma in Quality Diploma/Degree Culinary Arts
- You can start studying in your second to fourth year of study
- Attained a minimum average of 60%
- South Africa: Studying in a recognised tertiary education institution
- For logistics/ supply chain bursary:
- You can study towards these qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Operational Research, Bachelor of Commerce: Quantitative Management or Bachelor of Science in Logistics.
- You can start studying in your second or third year of studies.
- Attained a minimum average of 60%
- South Africa: Studying in a recognised and accredited institution
- Retail/Hospitality Business Management bursary:
- You can earn a Diploma in Retail Management by studying for it
- You can study in your first, second or third year of study
- Attained a minimum average of 60%

- E-Commerce (UI/UX design) Bursary :
- You can study for a degree in any of the following fields: Multi-Media/ Visual Communication/ Design/ User Interface/ UX
