Since then, various branches and pharmaceutical societies have been developed across South Africa. The Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa was not formed until 1946, when all of these societies were merged.
The PSSA has a vision to improve patient care and to increase the effectiveness of medications.
The PSSA Bursary Programs – Fields Covered
Students can apply to the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa for financial assistance for the 2020 academic year.
The Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education provides funding for pharmacy-related undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The PSSA administers the bursary.
Students in the second or following year will receive the Undergraduate Bursary. Bursaries are awarded one academic year at time. Each year, a renewal application is required. The bursary will be awarded according to the student’s financial situation, academic achievement and any other financial aid received.
The postgraduate bursary will be awarded to students studying for pharmacy related courses at masters and doctoral levels. Bursaries are awarded one academic year at time. Each year, a renewed application is required. The selection of candidates is based on two criteria: academic and project potential, which accounts for 60%; and financial need, which represents 40%.
ELIGIBILITY RESTRICTIONS FOR PSSA BURSARIES
Before applying, applicants must meet the minimum requirements (please be aware that if you do not satisfy these criteria your application will not be considered).
Bursary for Undergraduate students:
- South African citizenship is required
- Matriculation is required.
- Studying full time towards a BPharm qualification is required
- Students in their first year will not receive funding.
- Studying at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa is required

- All previous modules/subjects must be passed
- At mid-year, you must have achieved a average minimum of 60%.
- The family’s income must be less than R130000 per year before taxes.
Postgraduate bursary:
- South African citizenship is required
- Matriculation is required.
- The minimum qualification is a Bachelor’s degree
- The student must be enrolled full time in a pharmacy postgraduate qualification (Master or Doctoral).
- Studying at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa is required

Please submit a clear copy of all supporting documents along with the completed application (submission of any missing items may result in your application being disqualified).
- Document d’identification (certified copy).
- The full transcript of tertiary education (certified copy).
- A motivational letter by a lecturer in pharmacy
- Financial Declaration (Proof of Parents/ Guardians/ Household Income: Certified copy of payslips, if you are employed; Balance Sheet if you are self-employed; Affidavit for unemployed people or those working in the informal sector. Proof of Pension if applicable). (signed by both the applicant and the person who is responsible for the financial support.)

Notes about the PSSA Bursaries
- Original documents are NOT acceptable. Only certified copies must be presented.
- This bursary DOES NOT include any outstanding loans or student debts.
- Once the application is received, applicants will be notified by email.
- If you don’t hear back, your application has not been successful.
- No correspondence regarding this decision will take place.
- Before applying, postgraduate students must first read the Guidelines on the awarding of SAAHIP Post-Graduate Bursaries before submitting their application.

Postgraduate (Masters/ Doctoral) bursary: 5 May 2024.
Bursary for Undergraduate Students: Applications are CLOSED at the moment and will reopen in June 2024.
