Kay Mason Foundation South African Trust (KMF South African Trust) is one of the leading South African education foundations. In 1999, the program was launched with a goal to eliminate the obstacles that young South Africans who are underprivileged face in obtaining a quality education. KMF offers a variety of programs that are designed to provide scholars with the support they need (socially, academically, financially, and emotionally) to achieve their goals. KMF has helped a great number of students to change their lives.
KMF SCHOLARSHIP – WHAT IT IS
KMF invites students to apply for its scholarship program for the school year 2026.
Scholarships are available to high school students who will be entering in the year 2026. KMF ensures that students are placed in top South African universities, so they can begin their studies for Grade 8, achieve their academic goals and reach their full potential.
This programme aims to help children in disadvantaged areas gain the knowledge and skills needed to be future leaders in South Africa.
KMF SCHOLARSHIP: MORE INFORMATION
This scholarship covers a portion of the costs for: tuition, books, uniforms, transportation, tutoring and school camps. The scholarship will provide additional benefits such as psychometric testing and career counseling, in addition to support workshops.
It does not cover 100% of the cost of an scholar’s educational expenses. KMF works with parents in order to provide a brighter future for children.
Eligibility Requirements for the KMF Scholarship
Before applying, applicants must meet the minimum requirements (note that if you do not satisfy these criteria your application will be rejected):
- South African citizenship is required
- In 2024, you must be aged between 10-13 years.
- In 2024, you must have completed Grade 6.
- The year you will be starting 8th grade is 2026
- The Western Cape is required (Cape Town/ Southern Suburbs/ Northern Suburbs/ Helderberg area/ or travelling distance to the KMF office in Bellville).
- The combined gross household income must NOT exceed R17500 per month
- To attend class on Saturdays, you must commute to Bellville.
- To be a successful student, you must be able to demonstrate your leadership skills, hard work, and commitment.
How to Apply for the KMF Scholarship

Please submit a clear copy of all supporting documents with your online application.
- Birth certificate for Learners
- Documents of identification for parents or guardians/death certificate in the case of deceased
- Report for Grade 5 (Term 4).
- Report for Grade 6, Term 1
- Proof of Income for Parents or Legal Guardians
- If you are employed, please provide the most recent three months’ salary slips (IRP5s), a copy of your employment contract and three years’ IRP5s.
- Self-employed? 3 years of tax returns for the business, and 3 years’ IRP5 if you receive a salary
- Unemployed? Affidavit to state how long you have been unemployed and the reasons for your unemployment
- When receiving a SASSA Grant: Letter from SASSA verifying all SASSA Grants received by family members at home
- Proof of disability is required if you are disabled or cannot work.
- Retrenchment: UIF and retrenchment letter
- You will need 3 months of pension statements or 3 months’ salary slips, OR 3 years of IRP5 if you are receiving pension.
- As proof of income, a court order is sufficient if you are receiving maintenance.

- Before you submit your application, make sure that all supporting documents have been scanned and uploaded.
- Your application will be disqualified if you have any missing documents.
- The documents must be uploaded individually.
- Verify that all details of your contact are accurate.
Selecting the KMF Scholarship Program
This is the timeline for completing your scholarship:
- The first and second evaluations will be conducted on June 1, 2024.
- The final screening of the film will be between August and June 2024.
- The Selection and Support Programme will select candidates in August 2024.
- The third evaluation will be held on September 14, 2024.
- From September 2024 to February 2025, the Selection and Support Programme is scheduled.
- In February 2025, scholarships will be given out.
After KMF screens all potential applicants, candidates are then required to take a number of tests in order to see if they fit the requirements.
Successful candidates who pass the test will be invited to join the Selection and Support Program.
The candidates will be required to come in for classes and assessments each Saturday at Bellville. (Please note that this is not a guarantee of receiving the scholarship).
The scholarship will be officially awarded in 2025. Scholars will then form part of Senior Scholar Preparation Program.
The Saturday class will then continue.
