The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, founded in 2005, was part of Allan Gray’s goals to cultivate responsible entrepreneurship throughout Southern Africa. The foundations are currently active not only in South Africa but also in Namibia Botswana Swaziland.

Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Fellowship
The Foundation’s Fellowship Programme supports individuals in developing their entrepreneurial skills so that they can create businesses that will benefit the community. Candidates Allan Gray Fellows, the programme’s beneficiaries, will receive financial support for their tertiary studies as well as help to develop an entrepreneurial mindset.
The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation offers fellowships to students who deserve them in South Africa.
The following fields of study are eligible for fellowships:
- Commerce
- Science
- Engineering
- Law
- Humanities
- Arts &
- Health Science (Excluding Medicine and Veterinary Science and Dentistry).
The Fellowship covers the entire cost of tuition and accommodation at university, as well as books, meals and tutor allowances. It also provides a monthly allowance for living expenses, academic support, and access an entrepreneurial programme and personal development, as well as mentorship, and potential postgraduate funding.
The Allan Gray Fellows will not be bound by any obligations and are not required to work at the foundation once their studies are completed. The Allan Gray Fellows may also look for funding from other sources, as long as those providers permit it.
The foundation will require that the applicants study at one of its partner universities:
- Rhodes University
- Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMU)
- University of the Free State
- University of KwaZulu-Natal
- University of Johannesburg
- University of Pretoria
- University of the Witwatersrand
- University of Cape Town
- University of the Western Cape
- TSIBA (for 1st year intake only)
- Stellenbosch University
Bursary Requirements And Eligibility
FOR GRADE 12
- South African Citizen
- For final results in grade 11, you must have at least 60% in Pure Mathematics or a minimum 80% in Mathematical Literacy.
- The final grade 11 results must be at least 70% (excluding Life orientation).
- Under 21 years of age in the year you apply
- Intention to study for the WITS (or equivalent), UJ, UCT, NMU, RU, UWC, SU and UKZN.
- Applicants who want to study Commerce, Health Science, Engineering, Law, or Humanities in the partnering university.
FIRST YEAR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
- South African Citizen
- You must have at least a 65% average for your mid-year 2023 exam
- Currently studying either – UCT (or UWC), TSIBA (or SU), RU (or NMU), UKZN, UFS (or WITS), UP, or UJ
- Applicants who want to study Commerce, Science, Humanities, Engineering, or Law in the above-mentioned partner university.
- Under 22 years of age in the year they apply

- Identification Document
- Academic report for Grades 10 and 11
- If available, grade 12 latest academic report
- Recent passport-size photograph
- Academic/Extra-curricular awards/recognition/supporting documentation obtained in Grade 10, 11 and 12
- Reference from a teacher, stamped and signed. This reference is enclosed in a separate sealed envelope with the application.
